The carved oak mantelpiece in the great hall at Hillbark, which dates back to 1527, was once the altar piece in the Hertfordshire home of Saint Thomas More.
It was sold to a buyer in Birkenhead in 1930 and, up until now, where it ended up has been a mystery. And there have been some incorrect assumptions as to its origin. Picture of the sales brochure attached.
However, following research by historians in both Hertfordshire and Merseyside the altar piece has been located.
