Prices Patent Candle Company

I was fortunate enough to get some photos of the remains of Prices Patent Candle Company this weekend thanks to a friend of mine.  The site is all locked up now and has 24 hour security so its great that i was able to get these.  I know the site is being refurbished so lets hope they dont destroy the buildings.

The main building with the clock tower is now listed and cannot be demolished. The long building with the half barrel roof is one of the few workshop remaining on the site from 1852.

Just come accross this site and it's absolutely superb. I'd been looking into Prices when looking at the wifes family tree (one of her lot came up from Vauxhall in the 1850's), and wen't down the library in Birkenhead, and while they had lots of interesting information, I didn't see any photos. I wasn't aware any of the original buildings still stood in the factory, either. From what I did read, though, it does seem to have been a genuinely philanthropic company.

The accident reports made interesting reading too. "Unconciousness due to head coming into contact with plank" was one that stuck in my mind.

I dont suppose that any of the group photos you have on the site came with any names?

Cheers,

Cloughie.

Hi Doc,

First of all, thanks for a great website. I've been wandering (virtually) all over the Wirral with it, and it's turned up all manner of stuff I didn't know.

The two images I posted were actually of the "Bromborough Pool Mutual Improvement Society" 1858 report, but by the time they were shunk they're illegible. Sorry 'bout that, if you want a better copy PM me, but to be honest it's a bit dull. Not like the accident reports, which make Frank Spencer look positively coordinated, but didn't photocopy. I also took a copy of a page of the 1871 profit sharing and 1876 good comduct pay sheets, only interesting for genealogists I suspect. There was an interesting hand written account of the move up from London, IIRC full of suitable hardship wink.gif  in "kids exercise book" format amongst the archives.

The wifes g.g.g.Grandad was the head brickie when they came up from Southall (or at least his pay was twice as much as they other Brickies) so I expect he had a bit of a hand in the photos earlier in the thread.

Funny really, 'cos 158 years on, his g.g.g.g.grandson plays footie every now and again on the pitches in front of south view. Now if only the "mutual improvement society" could get a bacon butty stall set up on a Sunday morning wink.gif
