In November, 1846, my third great grandfather, Peter Lowe, was a publican in Barnston. A death certificate has long told me that he was accidentally shot and killed. Neither it nor the 1841 census gave the name of his pub. This week, the British Newspaper Archive went online (http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/) and there in both the Manchester Courier and the Liverpool Mercury I found details of his death. The reports note him as landlord of the Fox and Hounds.
Online histories of the current Fox and Hounds state it has changed names over the centuries and give its present name as a relatively recent one. There is no mention of this name being used in the 1840s. Does anyone know if the 1846 Fox and Hounds is the same pub as exists today or a different one entirely?
Hi Ronnie, Barnston is only a small place and the present fox and hounds is a very old pub so i would say that it is the same pub as in 1846,but i will have a check through my local history books for you.
In the 1841 census there is a Peter Lowe aged 40 Maria aged 30 Elizabeth aged 5 George aged 3 John aged 2 and Henry aged 1 and it states Peter was a Publican as far as i know there has only been one pub in Barnston namely the Fox and Hounds hope this helps
