Hi, I grew up in Oriel Road and we used to play in Well Lane on the part that had been bombed during the war.To us kids, it was known as "The Bombdy" Nestonlady (Angela)
love the photo when is it. My grandad lived there from 1919-1951 in well lane number 42, and his father before this. He said that houses where bombed there and they could not get the bodies of families out so it was flattened and built on. Do you have any photos of the old market street, birkenhead where his father was born? that would be brilliant as I work on that street now.
I remember my dad who used to be a..... eerrr what did you call them, they wore a tin hat and had a gas mask hanging round their necks and used to patrol the streets at night... night watchman, or something like that. Anyway in part answer to your question Julie, he was on his round/patrol near Well Lane and told me he saw the land mine coming down, I think he said by parachute......then a terrific KA-BOOOM and he was blown on to his back(not hurt though) and yes I remember it all both sides of the road all flattened it was like that for donkeys years. I remember the tripe shop on Market St......arrr yes lubbly jubbly, all gone now though. Even Old Chester Rd Lower Tranmere has been totally demolished, I used to stand on the doorstep of my mum & dads shop there and looking along it towards St Pauls/Well Lane it was a hive of activity, especially on Fridays and Sats. They had the Butterworths Dairy shop 50yds past the old Coliseum cinema, the kids used to queue-up outside on a Saturday afternoon after the matinee cos my dad made his own Ice-cream and was the only shop selling it at that time. ......love this picture. We lived opposite the Church in the background (St. Pauls I think)when I was a kid and spent many happy hours in Victoria Park.
