Parr's Cottages Oxton Vale

Hello

My family lived at 3 Parr's Cottages in 1851.

Pls can anyone tell me if these cottages still exist, or, if not, when were they demolished?

Regards

Carolyn

Hello Carolyn,

I believe they are the stone built cottages that are in Parr's Lane in Oxton.

They are identified and referred to on Page 8 of

A SHORT HISTORY OF OXTON 1800-1900 BY RAY JOHNSON

the exact quote being, "William Parr lived in a house in Mount Pleasant but he also owned a block of cottages, which are still standing, in what today is Parrs Road, although older Oxton residents still use its more familiar name of Parr's Lane."

As the cottages are just at the back of where I live, I will endeavour to take some photographs of them over the weekend and post them in here if possible.

In the meanwhile here is a "For Sale" listing with photos of one of the cottages which I believe is indeed Number 3, although the vendors now call it Birch Cottage.

Hope this helps

Hi again Carolyn,

if you click on this link it will open up a map showing the satellite view of the 2 pair of semi-detached cottages. If you click on "B" it will take you to the Street view and you can scroll along the blue line past the first cottage numbered 1 and 3 then the next cottage has nos 5 and 7

Will post up some photos for you once I have been and taken some.

Cheers,

George

Morning again Tiger.
Street View is great, many thanks and I'm really loopking forward to any pics of number 3 you take..
I love this bit from Ray Johnson
"At about this time Oxton was apparently also known to the trades people of Birkenhead as “Swindle Hill”, because of the quite frequent forgetfulness of some of its inhabitants who, having made their fortunes, decided to move on, leaving town without paying their bills." as my family member was a bankcrupt in Liverpool before m,oving to Oxton.!!!!!
Regards
Carolyn.
