St Andrews School

On the Old Wirral-Modern Photos the last two pictures titled *old dwelling"In Acres Road, Bebington are as I believe a picture of St Andrews School House  (one of the now separate dwellings has a plaque to this effect mounted on the wall) the houses are now grade 2 listed.

Does anybody have any history for this building for example when it was last used as a school house, when the conversion to dwellings took place any other information would be appreciated.

Hi ynwa.

This is some info from the book St Andrews (the Church)Bebington by Richard Lancelyn Green and this is from a chapter on the Parish School. Unfortunately i don't have a scanner so here is some info in date order.

1655 , deed founding a school a School in Bebington.

This established common land to be used to provide income for a school teacher (rather than a building). Common Land was at Lees (Near todays Port Sunlight station).

The School was first located in St Andrews Church Belfry (records confirm this in 1718 and was still there in 1778.

In 1791 the school moved into the Church Vestry.

The old Vestry was demolished in 1827and for a while School was held in the South Aisle of the Church.

"In 1828 Sir Thomas Massey gave the land in Acre Lane or 'School Lane' on which two (still extant ) schoolrooms and a house for the schoolmaster were built by voluntary donation"

These weren't built until around 1838 and it seems another building was used during construction.

In 1856 Major Orred of Tranmere Hall gave 3060 sq yds of land in Green Lane for a New School, completed in 1856 for £500(voluntary subscription).

It was extended in 1888 and 1901 and refurbished  in 1923.

New school built in 1974 in Townfield lane.

Hope that makes sense . I went to the school in Green Lane until 1973 , the last year before it moved to Townfield Lane.

Hi Inflatablebone

Thank you for you information, This is definately not the same St Andrews School, from old tithe maps  1836-51 it is shown as being owned by the trustees of Bebbington School (yes two b's in bebbington)
I can't see this property being called St Andrews school also, I will have to keep digging.

Thanks again.

The Tithe maps I think shows the ones in your photos on the bend of Acres road (, the lane going straight on before the turn to the left down past "your" houses) is Green lane that led to where the other (my)school was.

"Your" houses (built c 1838) were used until the one i went to was built.

The school built 1857 was at the end of Greenville Road which now continues as Greenville Close.  I went there until 1959.  It is the one in the 3 photos.  It was not in Acres Road.

The middle photo is taken from Tudorville Road and on the left you can see the footpath from the school to Tudorville.  It shows the boy's playground and sometimes balls ended up in the gardens of Tudorville but I believe they were recovered.  It also shows the new kitchen added to the school so that lunches could be prepared on the premises.  The other two show the view of the school as one walks in from Greenville Road or Green Lane, which used to end at the school, after passing Irvine's plant nursery.  It then became a footpath.
